Inclusive Spanish
One of the primary ways we prioritize inclusivity in our curriculum and in our classrooms is by teaching gender-neutral language.
Spanish is an inherently binary language where even objects are identified as either masculine or feminine. However, in recent years, queer communities throughout the Spanish-speaking world have come to adopt and promote gender-neutral language, opening up more space for non-binary, trans, and gender-nonconforming people to have their identities recognized and embraced.
Although not every Spanish-speaker will necessarily know, use, or respect this language, it is vitally important for Spanish learners to know the full range of options available for describing identity.
